TSMC, le fondeur ta\u00efwanais qui produit, entre autres les CPU AMD, une partie des SoC\u00a0Qualcomm et les SoC Apple Axx, vient de d\u00e9voiler sa nouvelle feuille de route pour la finesse de gravure des puces qui sortent de ses usines. La firme affirme \u00eatre pr\u00eate \u00e0 lancer la production 3 nm d\u00e8s 2022, soit un an plus t\u00f4t que TSMC ne le laissait jusqu'ici entendre. La production 5 nm commencera, elle, d\u00e8s le second trimestre 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A l'\u00e9poque de la ru\u00e9e vers l'or, ceux qui ont r\u00e9ellement b\u00e2ti des fortunes n'\u00e9taient pas les orpailleurs, mais ceux qui vendaient des pelles et des pioches. Une le\u00e7on que semble rappeler la sant\u00e9 insolente de TSMC, devenue la plus grosse capitalisation boursi\u00e8re d'Asie (262,75 milliards de dollars). Le fondeur n'est pas forc\u00e9ment tr\u00e8s connu du grand public. Il est pourtant celui qui produit la plupart des CPU AMD ainsi que les SoC des iPhone et smartphones Android avec entre autres clients : Nvidia, Qualcomm, Apple, Huawei, Alphabet, Alibaba, Xilinx…<\/p>\n

Il y a de nombreuses raisons \u00e0 cela. La firme est reconnue dans le secteur pour son vaste choix de tailles de gravure et la qualit\u00e9 de ses proc\u00e9d\u00e9s. Ainsi par exemple, TSMC fait tourner ses lignes de production 7nm \u00e0 plein r\u00e9gime mais propose toujours \u00e0 d'autres clients des tailles de gravures plus \u00e9paisses et des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s mieux \u00e9prouv\u00e9s et moins chers. La firme investit massivement dans la recherche et le d\u00e9veloppement, si bien qu'elle a acquis une expertise en mati\u00e8re de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s et de rendement.<\/p>\n

Elle propose \u00e9galement beaucoup de flexibilit\u00e9 \u00e0 ses clients – si bien que le fondeur a su fid\u00e9liser les plus grands noms de la tech. Or, la feuille de route en mati\u00e8re de finesse de gravure que TSMC vient de d\u00e9voiler est assez incroyable, et de bonne augure puisque cela se traduira par l'arriv\u00e9e sur le march\u00e9 de puces toujours plus performantes : le 3 nm<\/a> est d\u00e9sormais pr\u00e9vu pour la fin de l'ann\u00e9e 2022, au lieu de 2023 comme pr\u00e9vu initialement. Les premiers die grav\u00e9s en 5nm devraient, eux, commencer \u00e0 sortir des usines d\u00e8s le second trimestre 2020 en m\u00eame temps que chez Samsung Foundry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Concr\u00e8tement cela signifie que les leaders du march\u00e9, en particulier Apple, Huawei et Qualcomm pourront proposer des puces \u00e0 la gravure plus fine plus t\u00f4t.\u00a0L'int\u00e9r\u00eat d'accro\u00eetre la finesse de gravure est double. D'un c\u00f4t\u00e9 cela permet de densifier la quantit\u00e9 de transistors et autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments dans le m\u00eame espace. Cela permet \u00e9galement de r\u00e9duire la consommation \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique du die. N\u00e9anmoins, plus on s'approche du nanom\u00e8tre, plus certains effets ind\u00e9sirables apparaissent – contraignant le fondeur \u00e0 inventer de nouvelles m\u00e9thodes pour construire des transistors de quelques atomes de large fonctionnels, avec le moins de pertes d'\u00e9nergie possible.<\/p>\n
